What you can actually reach
One park is a drive away. The best one is a flight. And a "day safari" from the beach is a day out, not a safari.
Tsavo — the one you can drive to
Tsavo East and Tsavo West together form one of Kenya’s largest protected areas, and they sit on the corridor between Nairobi and Mombasa. From Diani it is three to five hours by road depending on the gate, or you can take the SGR train to Voi or Mtito Andei and be met.
What you get: enormous space, red-dusted elephants, a real sense of wilderness and very few other vehicles. What you give up: density. Tsavo is thicker bush than the Mara and sightings take more work.
Give it two or three nights. One is not worth the journey.
The Masai Mara — the one worth flying for
A flight to Nairobi and another to a Mara airstrip: a real travel day each way. In exchange, the best big-cat viewing in Kenya and, from July to October, the migration.
If you have ten nights or more, this is the pairing we would suggest. Four nights in the Mara, five at Diani, one in Nairobi.
Amboseli — the efficient middle
Flies via Nairobi, occasionally via Mombasa depending on the season. Amboseli only needs two nights, which makes it the efficient choice on a shorter trip: elephants, Kilimanjaro on a clear morning, and back to the sea.
What a "Diani safari" usually means
Somebody will offer you a day trip to Shimba Hills, or an overnight to a small sanctuary, described as a safari. Shimba Hills is a pleasant few hours of coastal forest and sable antelope. It is not a safari and it will not scratch the itch.
If you want to see Kenya’s wildlife, leave the coast for at least two nights. It is the single best piece of advice on this site.
How to order it
Safari first, beach second — always. You arrive fresh for the early mornings and end rested, the weather risk sits on the half you can flex, and the connections run better in that direction. The full argument is on our bush and beach guide.
